This bridge was demolished and replaced ca. 2012!

This bridge is a traditionally composed example of a riveted through plate girder. Pennsylvania built a large number of highway plate girders, more than many other states did. A problem with this is that because there are still a sizable number of examples remaining in the state today, the Historic Bridge Inventory used that as a reason to declare nearly all surviving plate girders as not historic. However, these bridges are being demolished at a rapid rate. The Salford Station Road Bridge is a good example, which sits closed awaiting demolition and replacement. Although this bridge is not an early example of its type, it is a multi-span example that retains excellent historic integrity. There also is a curved steel stringer bridge with concrete balustrade railings a short distance east of this bridge. That bridge is also slated for replacement. A few photos of the stringer are also in the photo gallery.

Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge Inventory

Discussion of Bridge

The 3 span, 270'-long built-up thru girder bridge is simply supported on reinforced concrete piers and abutments. Rolled floorbeams and stringers support the reinforced concrete deck. The 1933 bridge is a late example of its type, and is neither historically nor technologically distinguished.

Discussion of Surrounding Area

The bridge carries a 2 lane road over a stream in a sparsely developed, forested setting.

Information and Findings For Nearby Stringer Bridge From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge Inventory

Discussion of Bridge

The 43'-long steel stringer bridge built in 1933 is supported on a concrete substructure and has standard concrete balustrades. An additional stringer was framed into the fascia stringer to the abutment to accommodate the roadway curvature. This is a common solution for bridges at intersections which was adapted for use here. It has no other innovative or distinguishing details and is an example of the most common, mid-20th century bridge type in the state. Neither the bridge nor its setting/context are historically or technologically noteworthy. It is one of over 4341 pre-1956 steel stringer bridges in Pennsylvania.

Discussion of Surrounding Area

The bridge carries a 2 lane road over a stream in a forested setting with 20th century residential development nearby. The area does not appear to have historic district potential. No mill structures are clearly visible near the bridge.
