This bridge was apparently part of a railroad line Pennsylvania Railroad constructed to carry freight and reduce traffic on its mainline. This line apparently operated as late as the early 1980s. This bridge is today abandoned and it has no deck.
This bridge is a very long span railroad truss bridge for an overpass bridge. Normally spans this long are reserved for large river crossings. However, this bridge crosses a road and a wide railroad line with multiple tracks and it crosses these features at an extreme skew. Despite the angle it crosses, the bridge itself is not skewed... which would make the bridge even longer. Not crossing a river makes this bridge look even bigger than it might in the middle of a large river. As a pin-connected truss with excellent historic integrity it is a noteworthy historic bridge. It is abandoned, but is not doing any harm by standing where it is. However it could also be relocated and reused in a new location, perhaps as part of a non-motorized trail. With its Parker truss providing a graceful arch-like shape and its substantial span length, the bridge would be a signature attraction on any trail system.
