This is an increasingly rare example of an unaltered highway plate girder in Pennsylvania. Many examples have been demolished, or been partially encased in concrete. This bridge does not suffer from such issues (yet).
Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge The single span, 92'-long thru girder bridge built in 1940 is supported on skewed reinforced concrete abutments with flared wingwalls. The bridge with rolled steel floorbeams has a reinforced concrete deck. Concrete end posts are at each corner of the bridge. It is one of many pre-1956 thru girders in the state. The built-up thru girder type/design has been in widespread use since the mid-19th century. The bridge is not technologically significant, nor does the setting appear to be historically noteworthy. Discussion of Surrounding Area The bridge carries a 2 lane state highway over a stream in a rural area of active agriculture.
