This bridge, which may be unique among surviving bridges in the province, contains a tiny single leaf bascule span flanked by impressive through truss approach spans. The bascule span no longer opens for boats, and the counterweights have been removed, as have been most of the machinery. The fixed truss spans are rare examples of a Pennsylvania truss in the province. The bascule span, despite alteration, retains enough integrity to convey its significance as a rare surviving example of small-scale bascule bridge construction. Further, bascule bridges of any size are uncommon in the province.
The plaque on the bridge reads 1920 but apparantly the bridge was not opened by Prime Minister Louis-Alexandre Taschereau until 1922. The bridge was originally a toll bridge, and replaced a wooden bridge.
This bridge is unusual in that its main span is not the longest span of the bridge. In fact, the bascule span is dwarfed by the fixed truss approach spans. Span lengths given for the bridge are extremely rough estimates. The bascule span is tiny, and appears to be only about 60 foot span. The fixed through truss approach spans appear to measure about 190 feet each.
