This bridge is an impressive through truss noted for its multi-span configuration. This beautiful bridge in a very scenic location (indeed the bridge is located near Frontenac National Park) yet has been sentenced to the dumpster despite obvious preservation potential. The bridge is being replaced, reportedly because this road is a major highway in the region. That fact is not in dispute. However, preservation options for the heritage bridge have been dismissed. Although the new bridge is being built next to the heritage bridge, the heritage bridge will not be left standing next to its replacement and will be demolished. Even more ridiculous, the new bridge is being designed with a sidewalk for pedestrians. Surely a better option would have been to reduce the cost of the new bridge by not building a sidewalk, and instead preserving the heritage bridge for pedestrian use. Doing so would create a more scenic crossing for pedestrians and also would be safer, as they would be further away from the heavy highway traffic. One article claimed that a reason for demolishing the heritage bridge is to increase clearance for boats. However it would have been possible to jack up the heritage bridge if that was important enough.
This historic bridge has been demolished. This map is shown for reference purposes only.
