This is the largest and most unique of three old bridges on the grounds of Sanctuaire Notre-Dame-du-Cap. The bridge commemorates the miracle of the formation of the natural ice bridge that formed over the St. Lawrence River in 1879. The ice bridge was used to haul stone used to build a church at this site. The large church that is the centerpiece today dates to 1964 and is not the one that the stones were used in. Historical photos of this bridge show the previous church, which was demolished. The bridge is historically significant as a regionally uncommon example of a concrete arch bridge. It is further significant for its unique ornamentation including large rosaries, and statues. The bridge features two arch ribs along the edge of the deck, but the center of the deck is supported by a concrete t-beam. In a sense, the bridge is a hybrid of a concrete arch and concrete t-beam bridge.
