This bridge was originally built at an unknown date (likely the 1880s or 1890s), and included a swing span. This can be determined by the fact that one of the river piers is circular as a swing pier would have been. The swing span was replaced in 1907 with two fixed through truss spans constructed by the Virginia Bridge and Iron Company. As one might expect, these newer spans are of different construction, reflecting the construction trends of the period: namely the use of heavier members and riveted connections. The approach spans in contrast reflect an earlier era with their pin-connections, lightweight members, and ornamental portal bracing. In more recent years the approach truss spans have had steel and timber bents added under the floorbeams to carry load. The added steel bents may have been salvaged parts from a demolished truss bridge.
