This bridge was noted for its highly unusual three span continuous truss unit where a central through truss span is flanked by deck truss spans. In the most simple sense, the design resembled larger, more complex bridges like the Blue Water Bridge. However this bridge over the Clinch River was much smaller and simpler in design, an unusually eye-catching and distinctive truss design for this crossing.
The bridge was officially named the Honorable William Everett Lewallen Memorial Bridge by a House Joint Resolution in the 1967-1968 Session.
