Bridge Documentation

This is one of two impressive and uncommon pin-connected railroad deck truss bridges in this area. This one has a third truss line in the middle. This is an ancient alteration by the railroad. Adding a third truss line in the middle of a two truss bridge was a method sometimes used to strengthen railroad deck truss bridges. An incorrect 1917 construction date was given for this bridge by inventory data and in fact this date may indicate when the bridge might have been altered with the addition of a third truss line. The pin-connected design dates to 1903 and was described in a 1903 engineering article. Phoenix Bridge Company built the superstructure, while Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Works of Kansas City was the substructure contractor.
