This is the younger of two large historic bascule bridges in the city, and this one still can open for boats. In addition to the bascule span, the bridge is flanked by two through truss spans on each side, plus some concrete approach spans. The "main" bascule span is not the longest span on the bridge. The bascule span is reported at 196.8 feet (60 meters) which may refer to the clear width for navigation and not the trunnion-to-trunnion span length used by engineers to denote bascule span length. The approach truss spans are noted at 209 feet (64 meters).
