This bridge is the most noteworthy of the remaining Noble County railroad overpasses. Unlike the other bridges, it features a larger center main span, giving the bridge a more interesting appearance. The bridge also retains original pole guardrails. The east-west road curves sharply to cross this bridge which is aligned perpendicular to the rail line. Seated on concrete abutments and supported by metal truss supports, this bridge is a warren pony truss. The bridge features riveted connections, and has a wooden deck. Fading white paint remains on isolated parts on the bridge, but is otherwise rust-covered. V-lacing is present on diagonals and on the bottom chord. The county should move to restore this bridge, which is an unusual and attractive way to cross the railroad tracks.
The number of highway truss railroad overpasses remaining is very low. Surviving examples are significant. Among the unusual Noble County railroad overpasses, this bridge is the largest, and retains historic integrity in the form of its original railings. This bridge should receive the highest preservation priority.
Information and Findings From DHPA Historic Bridge SurveyStatement of Significance A number of features distinguish this bridge: the use of some pin connections, the absence of verticals, and the design of the endposts and top chords. The undecorated trusses retain their original members. Architectural Description Concrete abutments and crafted I beam steel piers support the three-span Warren pony truss. The partly-riveted and partly-pinned structure extends 121' in two triple and one quintuple panel span. The top chord and endposts of the trusses are made from a pair of heavy angles riveted together with a cover plate and its diagonals from a pair of laced angles. Verticals are omitted. The I floor-beams are U-bolted to gusset pins below the lower chord and carry the timber deck with its 16'3" roadway. Bridge Considered Historic By Survey: Yes |
