The Card Road Bridge is a warren pony truss. It retains original lattice guardrails. The deck is concrete on top of corrugated steel, forming a jack-arch type of deck that enjoyed a short period of popularity in early 20th Century Michigan. The truss members appeared to be in decent condition, however a portion of the deck is falling apart.
When first documented by HistoricBridges.org, this bridge appeared to have been closed for at least a decade (The actual time is over 20 years). Some years ago, not only was this historic truss bridge doomed, the county wanted to replace it with the highly overrated type of bridge known as a covered bridge. This was not going to be an old bridge moved here, it was going to be a non-historic, 21st century covered bridge. This is a ridiculous idea that disgraces the historic significant of historic truss bridges, but historic covered bridges as well. Fortunately, further discussion of this idea has not been heard of for some time now. Perhaps it will be forgotten.
The trusses of this bridge remain in decent condition. Restoration for pedestrian use (or even light vehicular use) either in this location or in a new location appears not only feasible, but cost-effective as well.
