There are no in-service highway truss bridges left in Berrien County. There used to be a Glassman Road Bridge according to MDOT and the Flynn Road Bridge was another. The Flynn Road Bridge was not assessed as historic at the time the 1995 historic bridge inventory was completed, but it appears that this bridge was replaced in 2004 or 2005, and if an assessment was done then, the bridge would likely be considered historic. There are too few truss bridges left in Michigan to list it as otherwise.
The memory of the Flynn Road Bridge will, unlike other historic bridges in Berrien County, not fade completely. Just the trusses from the bridge have been set on small concrete bases for decorative purposes. A pond is dug on either side of the driveway, and a culvert passes under the driveway between them. The addition of these trusses gives the illusion that there is a bridge there. This was a great way for a private individual to save a portion of the bridge without spending a lot of hard-earned money.
The trusses of the Flynn Road Bridge tell a lot about what the whole bridge once was. The bridge was a warren pony truss with riveted connections. Outriggers are seen on the vertical members, and v-lacing is under the top chord.
