This bridge is a late but uncommon surviving example of a truss bridge on a provincial highway. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation gives a date of 1963 for this bridge. All connections are bolted. Rivets are present on the bridge as well, holding the built-up beams together. This is evidence of the transition away from riveting that occurred in the middle of the 20th Century. The KH-21 bridge has steel stringer approaches, one span at each end. The main truss span sits on simple concrete piers.
There are old abutments next to this bridge, and they are concrete also, indicating a previous bridge was here before the present span. Based on the concrete design of the abutments which are actually in good condition considering their abandonment, it seems likely that the previous bridge dated to the early 20th Century.
In 2005, this bridge was rehabilitation. The work included repainting the trusses, which really improved the appearance of the bridge. The paint will also protect the bridge from rusting. The original steel railings were replaced with unsightly New Jersey Barriers, which substantially obstructed the view of the bridge. The only good thing about the barriers is they protect the trusses from collision damage, and the solid nature of the barriers should help deflect winter deicing salts away from the trusses, helping to prevent the deterioration that the salt can cause.
