This Warren pony truss bridge gives Pretty Road a reason for its name, although when this bridge was built that it was unlikely considered a visual asset to the St. Clair Township/Lambton County landscape since bridges like this would have once been common. Today however, its complex trusses offer a lot more to look at that the any bridge built today, and bridges like this are increasingly uncommon in Ontario thanks to demolition and replacement. This bridge continues to carry traffic with the only alteration of note being the replacement of the original railings with Armco guardrails. When photographed in 2006, there was no evidence on this bridge that it ever had paint! While in good condition at that time, leaving a steel bridge without paint reduces its life. If a truss bridge is properly painted over the decades, with perhaps a full restoration thrown in between, a lifespan of at least 200 years is realistic. Without paint, that lifespan will most likely not be achieved.
A wonderful surprise awaited in a 2022 revisit when it was discovered that the bridge was indeed found to be fully repainted and in great condition! It is outstanding to see Lambton County step up and take measures to ensure this heritage bridge can remain a landmark for many years to come. As so few bridges are being preserved in other areas of Ontario, this bridge is only becoming more rare and significant with time. St. Clair Township/Lambton County deserves to be thanked for choosing to do what so many other municipalities in Ontario have failed to do: preserve their heritage bridges!
The builder of this bridge is unknown. The remains of the ceramic coated metal plate plaques that so many Ontario builders used are present on the bridge, but too much is gone to associate a builder at this time. There are some distinctive patterns (that don't match up with other plaques of this type that have been seen), and it appears the company has "Bridge Works" and "Ontario" in its name, which is somewhat unhelpful.
