This is an very rare example of a deck truss bascule bridge in Canada. It is unclear why a double-leaf deck truss bascule bridge was selected for this crossing, when elsewhere on the canal, vertical lift bridges or single leaf through plate girder bascule bridges were the standard. The bridge is a Scherzer rolling lift bascule bridge, with an under-deck counterweight. A somewhat unusual design feature for an under-deck counterweight bascule is that the roller, counterweight are not enclosed in a building and tail pit, but sit out in the open for all to see under the bridge. The bridge retains its lattice railing, although this railing does not have the decorative scrollwork on top of the lattice like the other Welland Canal bridges with original railing. A series of deck plate girder spans provide an approach at each end. These are supported by steel bents.
