Bridge Documentation

This is one of only a few through style cast iron arch bridges in the UK. Most cast iron arch bridges are deck arch bridges. At some point in the bridge's historic riveted floorbeams were added to supplement the original cast iron floorbeams. Both remain in place. A newer (but still old) bridge was built to replace this bridge, resulting in this bridge being abandoned but not demolished. The deck has been removed, but the arches and floorbeams all remain in place and available for viewing their impressive cast iron construction. Having the deck off the bridge actually better illuminates the details of the construction.

Official Heritage Listing Information and Findings Listed At: Grade II Discussion: List Entry Number: 1356431 SD 80 NE CHADDERTON MANCHESTER TO LEEDS RAILWAY LINE 3/52 Disused bridge over Rochdale Canal G.V. II Railway bridge over Rochdale Canal. 1863 for the Manchester to Leeds Railway Co. Cast-iron with stone abutments and wrought-iron remedial work of later C19. Skew bridge. Convex-bottomed cast-iron beams span between the principal girders. Later wrought-iron beams were added between each of the original beams. Each is bolted to the principal girders which have open painted arcades,incorporated arched compression members and which were pre-cast in several sections before being bolted together. Decorated spandrels have pierced quatrefoils and daggers and form a Tudor arch below the principal girders.The large square abutment piers were removed on the west when a new bridge was constructed adjacent to the old one. The later bridge is not included in this entry.
