Bridge Documentation

This bridge is one of the finest known examples of a rare archaic bridge type known as a clapper bridge, composed of stone slabs. The date given is when the bridge was first recorded. It is assumed to date to the 1300s and this is the closest estimate of a construction date. Its slabs are over four meters (13 ft) long, two meters (6 ft 6 in) wide and weigh over eight tons each. Reportedly a farmer once knocked a slab into the water trying to create dam, an effort which failed. The bridge was restored in 1879. It was bypassed by a stone arch bridge in the 1700s and left in place.
