This bridge is famous as the bridge that sits in the shadow of Parliament and Big Ben. The load-bearing arches of this bridge, as configured today, are a most unusual arrangement. The center (crown) of the arch features riveted steel/iron beams, while the rest of the arches are composed of cast iron. It is not known if this is an original detail or the result of a repair.
The bridge has the appearance of an all-cast iron arch bridge because of the decorative cast iron fascia it includes, which hides the half-riveted arches described above. The cast iron fascia arches on this bridge, while a copy of the original design, are not original in terms of materials, they are replica replacements that were placed on the bridge in a major 2005-2007 rehabilitation. The bridge's Gothic detailing was designed by Charles Barry (the architect of the Palace of Westminster complex).
