This bridge was originally constructed as a three span European style bowstring truss bridge. The center span is not original and is a replacement, likely the result of war damage, Although not original, the replacement span is still old enough to be riveted, although its design details are less complex, typical of younger truss spans.
The carries a railway in between the truss lines, with a cantilevered deck on the outside of each truss line. The cantilevered deck has the size and appearance of a sidewalk for pedestrian use. The east cantilevered deck has been closed to all traffic. However the west cantilevered deck remains open to one-way (southbound) motorbike traffic. There is barely enough room for a single motorbike to pass a pedestrian on this deck. The bridge originally carried a combination of highway traffic and railway traffic between truss lines.
Another bridge nearby, Cầu Ghềnh, was of similar design to this bridge, and it retained all original spans (four total on that bridge). However, the two spans of that bridge were destroyed in 2016 when a boat crashed into the pier. The bridge was completely replaced following this accident.
