Bridge Documentation

This is a very old bridge, likely from the French period, and after being abandoned and threatened with demolition, it has been beautifully rehabilitated for pedestrian use as part of a new riverfront park. It originally served a road that would have ran along the river, but the road was likely realigned inland to its existing position when the nearby Saigon River Tunnel was built. The bridge was then abandoned. The new realigned road also filled in the waterway so the new roadway does not have a bridge. When the city first presented plans for a riverfront park, renderings showed a silly looking modern bridge where this historic bridge is suggesting the plan was demolition and replacement with a new pedestrian bridge. Fortunately at some point someone must have decided that this was a waste of money and history, and instead the decision was made to rehabilitate this historic bridge. The bridge today is a historic centerpiece landmark to a modern redevelopment of the area into a riverfront park. The bridge has decorative lighting to highlight the historic concrete t-beams underneath the deck. Length given is a very rough estimate.
