This bridge was originally built as a vertical lift bridge. However it was turned into a fixed bridge that no longer could open for boats. Projects to remove elements related to the lift portion of the bridge took place in 1966 and 1979. The end result of all this was that the bridge's main span now has the appearance of one longer through truss span flanked by two short through truss spans at each end. The shorter spans are where the lift towers once were, with the longer central span being the lift span. East of the main spans is a very long viaduct system. Sometimes this isn't counted as part of the bridge proper. An estimate of the total length including viaduct is shown above in the blue table.
The entire bridge was closed to traffic when documented by HistoricBridges.org and plans are to demolish the bridge.
