Bridge Documentation

This remarkable footbridge of lightweight construction blends right into the trees, with its tall, stilt-like bents and unusual double-Warren trusses. The bridge has an interesting history. The largest center span of the bridge actually dates to 1907 and was originaly built by Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Company as the entrance bridge to the park at the south end. By 1913 this lightweight bridge quickly became insufficient for the main entrance to the park. As such it was replaced, and the span was reused in this bridge, a new bridge being constructed at the north end of the park. As such the center span of this bridge dates to 1907, while the rest of the bridge dates to 1913. The 1913 portions were built by Worden-Allen Company.

The HAER documentation suggests that the bridge's unusual European style top chord which seamlessly and continuously curves into a vertical endpost was a trademark of Wisconsin Bridge and Iron, HistoricBridges.org wonders if this relation is accurate. Elsewhere in the documentation, A. Y. Bayne and Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota is mentioned as a designer of the bridge.
