This bridge was originally built in 1893 as a railway bridge.
This bridge is one of the oldest cantilever through truss bridges in North America, having been built around the same time as the Frisco Bridge in the United States. It could be considered an early or even prototypical example of what eventually became one of the most common forms of cantilever through truss, that being one with a horizontal bottom chord and a top chord that forms pointed towers above the piers, and slopes down to a trapezoidal-shaped suspended truss span.
In 1945, a new railway bridge was built next to this bridge, and the railway bridge was then re-decked to carry highway traffic.
