This bridge replaced the historic Waneta cantilever bridge, allowing that bridge to be converted for highway use. Unlike the prototypical Waneta cantilever bridge that was among the earliest of its type, this 1945 bridge composed of simple riveted through truss spans is in general traditionally composed and a fairly late example of its type. It does have one very unusual and mysterious detail however at the top chord and end post connections. At both of these connections on the middle span but only on these connections over the piers for the end spans there is a pin present. This pin is in addition to the gusset plates that are found on all the connection points holding the members together, so the pin does not appear to serve any purpose. And as stated, there is no pin at the top chord/end post connections over the abutments. The purpose of the pin is unclear, however it may have aided the erection of the bridge during its initial construction.
