This bridge is an excellent example of a Strauss heel trunnion bascule bridge, and the bridge was indeed designed by the Strauss Engineering Company. The bascule span is 226 feet long. The Sacramento County engineer in charge at the time was Charles W. Deterding, Jr. The bridge includes traditionally composed fixed through truss approach spans (each 120 feet in length), which nicely compliment the main through truss bascule span. Both approach and bascule span trusses appear to retain good historic and structural integrity. In contrast, the original bridgetender house appears to have been completely replaced, along with the control equipment. The current control system is a modern control panel of pushbuttons and indicator lights and an automated, computer-controlled lift and lowering sequence. In 1953, the original wooden deck was replaced with a steel grid deck. The bridge was rehabilitated in 2000.
