Bridge Documentation

This outstanding multi-span Luten arch bridge has been beautifully restored for pedestrian use. In the context of Florida this multi-span bridge of 200 feet stands out as one of the longest surviving Luten arch bridges, as Florida has a number of surviving Luten arch bridges, but most are small single span bridges. It also is highly significant at the local level as it is the only surviving historic bridge of any kind in the entire county.

The bridge carried State Road 18 which was a major east-west route in Florida. A beautiful historic concrete roadway from this old highway remains in place west of the bridge.

This bridge is of interest because it uses the simple solid panel railings that the Luten Bridge Company typically used for bridges in rural loctions. Often major Luten bridges leading into cities like this bridge would be built with balustrade railings. However, despite the use of the simple railing panels, the original bridge did have street lights on the railings. These had been removed in years past, and new replica lights have been added to this bridge as part of the restoration project.
