This bridge is a very large cantilever truss bridge. It also includes continuous through truss spans immediately east of the traditional three cantilever truss spans. These extra truss spans give the bridge a stronger tunnel-like experience while driving over it, and an asymmetrical appearance when viewed from the river or shore. The bridge is a high level bridge to provide for boats, and because of the low elevation of the land it connects, an extensive approach system to bring the road up to the height needed is present at each end of the bridge. Bethlehem Steel Company fabricated the bridge, while Merritt-Chapman and Scott Corporation erected the bridge.
This bridge was built as part of the initial development of the Arlington Expressway.
