This is a highly unusual bridge. It was reportedly built in 1898, so it it an early example of a truss bridge in Illinois with riveted connections. The trusses have a lightweight design to them, with angles being the primary type of rolled steel composing members on the truss. The bridge is also unusual because its trusses are configured like a deck truss with an attractive arch-like polygonal configuration of the bottom chord. However, the trusses also rise above the deck, like a pony truss. This type of truss positioning is often called a railing height truss. The top chord as well as the deck run at two angles, meaning the top center of the bridge comes to a point, both on the deck and on the top chord.
This bridge has been bypassed by a modern highway bridge, but appears to have been left standing for its historic significance. The bridge is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
