Additional Information: Since the writing of the below narrative, Jeff Banker who was a supervisor on the 2012 rehab project contacted HistoricBridges.org and indicated that the color of the bridge was chosen by the city.
This bridge with its 1933 construction date is the youngest surviving Marsh arch bridge in Kansas. With an impressive 200 foot span that sends the arch soaring far above the roadway in dramatic fashion, this is also the longest-spanning Marsh arch span in Kansas as well. The portions of the arch above the roadway were coated with a protective sealant. It is unclear why a red-orange color was chosen for the sealant. Typically with historic concrete bridges, any patching or sealing attempts to replicate the color of the original concrete. That said, the color of the bridge is not inoffensive, and any effort to preserve this iconic and historically significant bridge is worthwhile and commendable. This bridge, due to its span length and lack of alteration should be considered one of the most significant Marsh arch bridges in the entire country.
