View a YouTube drone video that shows a closer view of the lift bridge and the bridge as a whole.
This bridge is noted for its 645.5 foot span (actual clear span length is 643.875 feet). This span was the longest simple truss span that used riveted connections only. At this time, most long-span truss bridges either used pin-connections, or a combination of pinned and riveted connections. The massive trusses of this span are very impressive to view, being 110.5 feet tall at the center, and 74 feet tall at the portals. The span is 34 feet wide and weighs 6,209 tons.
At the south end of the bridge, there is a vertical lift span over the channel that allows boats to pass through locks and avoid the Falls of the Ohio.
This bridge replaced the famous Louisville Bridge, which was an iron Fink truss bridge built in 1870 according to the design of famous engineer Albert Fink himself.
