US-131 in Allegan County displays a number of bridges which feature Michigan's beautiful "R-4" type ornamental railing. Some are steel stringers, most dating to 1957, and others are concrete pre-stressed, most of those dating to 1959. The M-222 Bridge is a representative example of those concrete structures, and is a good record of this particular form of construction for the late 1950s and early 1960s. This bridge is not any more noteworthy than the other examples of this type on US-131. At the time of this documentation many of them retained similar details and integrity, the addition of Armco railings being the only major alteration on any of these examples. It would seem sensible however to select one or more of these structures for particular preservation attention to ensure that at least one of these structures remains for its aesthetic and historic value in the decades to come. This particular bridge was selected for website inclusion as a representative of the group due to the ease of photography for this crossing, and also the fact that because it is listed in the National Bridge Inventory as structurally deficient and also on state trunkline, it is the most likely of the bridges in this group to face demolition.
