This bridge is one of Wayne County's unusual cantilever concrete arch bridges. Several such examples remain in Wayne County, but the structure type is exceedingly rare elsewhere in the United States. Unlike a true arch bridge, Wayne County's cantilevered arch spans are actually composed of two structurally independent arch halves that cantilever out from the abutments. In Wayne County, most of these bridges have cantilever arms that hold a suspended concrete slab span in the center of the bridge. The Merriman Road Bridge however is an exception to this since it does not include a suspended span. Instead, the two cantilever arms simply meet each other at the center of the bridge. The observant visitor will see confirmation that this is a cantilever arch bridge upon noting the small gap in the guardrail at the center of the bridge and the seam of a joint running across the deck at this point as well, indicating that each half of the bridge is structurally independent.
This bridge's original railings have been replaced with unsightly modern guardrail. However, the underlying arch structure retains good historic integrity with no major alterations noted.
