Bridge Documentation

This bridge is one of a few lattice through truss bridges in the Upper Peninsula, which are the only examples in the entire state of this uncommon and visually distinctive truss type. All these lattice truss bridges in Michigan are associated with the Chicago and NorthWestern Railroad, which built this truss type repeatedly, favoring its reliability even if damaged in a derailment. Each surviving example, including this one, is rare and significant, particularly in the context of Michigan's historic bridges. Other bridges of this design on this railroad line date to 1917, so a ca. 1917 date seems appropriate for this bridge. The railroad line itself first went through here in 1877.
