This bridge is one of two identical steel through tied arch bridges in the city. Constructed in 1970, they were constructed right on the cutoff date that HistoricBridges.org has set for bridge inclusion on the Bridge Browser. They have mainly been included on this website because their design is unique in Michigan, and steel through arch bridges are an uncommon structure type, especially with bridges of this size. They are also included to contrast with the genuine historic bridges in Sault Ste. Marie. While at first glance these 1970 bridges might appear beautiful and attractive, when compared to the other historic bridges in the city, they appear rather plain and boring. For example, consider the intricate yet bold design of the mighty Ashmun Street Bridge, an unrivaled mastery of engineering and beauty. This contrast demonstrates the progression that bridge design made from one of complexity and beauty to simplicity and utilitarian appearance. Other more modern bridges not worthy of inclusion in HistoricBridges.org are so plain and ugly that they make these 1970 arch bridges look like works of fine art.
