This bridge is a good representative example of a curved t-beam freeway
overpass in Michigan. Curved t-beam overpasses exist in a few different states
across the county, but most out of state examples lack the aesthetic qualities
seen in Michigan's unaltered examples, where the arched beams combine with
Michigan's signature Type R4 railings and the attractively shaped piers to form
a visually pleasing overpass, a genuine rarity on an Interstate Highway. I-94
contains the largest number of remaining examples in Michigan, particularly
unaltered examples which retain original railings. Among those with original
railings, some have had Armco guardrails added to the inside, while others have
no added guardrail. Those with no added guardrails on them are very rare today,
and those examples stand out as the most important to recognize and document on
HistoricBridges.org. The Britain Avenue Bridge is one such example with no added
guardrails. The bridge has a 25 degree skew, and according to the National
Bridge Inventory was never rehabilitated over its service life. Unfortunately, this bridge is slated for demolition and replacement.
