Bridge Documentation

The construction date for this bridge is unknown, but other bridges in the park were built under the Works Progress Adminstration, so it is assumed this bridge dates to the late 1930s. Dimensions given are estimates.

This park and associated original bridges were built under the Works Progress Administration. Bridges associated with programs like this elsewhere in Michigan have been found eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as the Great Depression, folowed by the recovery through these relief programs, making the bridges resulting from it represent significant in documenting this major event in American history.

The unusual railing design does not follow any known standard plan in Michigan. The railings are perhaps the most interesting feature of the bridge, and are similar to the concrete railings found on some bridges in the state of Oklahoma. The bridge stringers appear to be in good condition. The expansion joints on the bridge have plate steel on top of them, suggesting some deck deterioration there, and make a lot of noise when cars cross them.
