This bridge is an impressive multi-span truss bridge that carries a highway over a railroad yard. To protect the bridge from exhaust from the trains, the bottom chord and flooring system of the bridge was encased in concrete. The bridge is wide for a bridge of its age with a roadway of 26.6 feet plus the north sidewalk on the inside of the truss. There is also a cantilevered sidewalk on the south side of the truss. The bridge has heavy truss members, and some of the built-up beams on the bridge have unusual lacing bars with a unique crimped detail on them, likely to give them additional strength.
The bridge has not been maintained, as evidenced by the lack of paint on the bridge. Rather than preserve and rehabilitate this bridge, demolition and replacement is planned for this historic bridge. This is a disappointing decision, since the bridge is wide enough to safely handle modern traffic, and the bridge adds history and beauty to an otherwise typical industrial rail yard setting.
