Based on a field visit with no further information, this appears to be some sort of a welded truss bridge that was built using, in part at least, steel salvaged from a riveted truss bridge. Although the construction of this bridge is all-welded, looking closely, such as underneath the top chord, will reveal some rivets, and also evidence that lighter beams had welded alterations done to them to strengthen them.
The bridge offers little historic value, but is still a curiosity for the unusual story it tells, a story that likely also tells the story of a county that came up with some unusual solutions for its bridges.
Information and Findings From New Jersey's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge The 4-panel welded Warren with verticals pony truss bridge is supported on concrete abutments with wingwalls. The outriggers are skewed to the span. The construction date is undocumented, but it dates technologically and stylistically no earlier than 1935. The floor beams were replaced in 1948, and welded repairs and reinforcements were made in 1953. Discussion of Surrounding Area The bridge carries one lane of a quiet country road over a minor stream in a wooded rural setting. The nearby land currently is used for agricultural purposes, but housing development is encroaching on the farmland. Bridge Considered Historic By Survey: No |
