This bridge is an extremely rare bridge because it features two things that are individually extremely rare. First, the structure is a pin-connected Baltimore truss. Very few such examples remain today. In addition, this bridge uses the rare patented wrought iron Phoenix Columns, which are a special type of built up beam that have their distinctive circular sections riveted together to form hollow tubes. Very few bridges with these types of columns remain today. In addition, the bridge is significant simply because it is a visually impressive structure with portal bracing decoration and a tall truss that is impressive to stand before.

The bridge was restored in 2004 to allow this bridge to continue to carry light vehicular traffic. Overall the restoration work was done well, however the floor beams appear to have been replaced with is an unfortunate loss because the original floorbeams were built-up, making them far more complex than the modern rolled beams present on the bridge today. The use of bolts instead of rivets is also not the best solution, but not as serious of a problem. The truss webs themselves however appear to be original and unaltered, and as such this bridge can continue to stand out as one of the top bridges in New York and among the best in the country.

This bridge is tagged with the following special condition(s): Phoenix Columns
