This bridge is unusual because its trusses are very tall. As seen in the above photo, the truck is dwarfed by the trusses. Trusses tended to get taller the longer the span was, since a bigger, stronger truss would be needed. Once the length (and thus, truss height) got long enough, overhead bracing had to be added to stabilize the trusses, and the result was a through truss.
