This bridge is one of two railroad truss bridges right next to each other. View the other bridge here. The other bridge is a traditional Warren truss bridge. This bridge however is an uncommon and beautiful lattice truss bridge. The bridge was built by the Erie Railroad. The bridge is today abandoned but in excellent condition. It retains good historic integrity, with the exception of the bottom chord which has had cover plate added to it.
Local historian and preservationist Jess Lamar Reece Holler contacted HistoricBridges.org in October 2022 with news articles about this bridge.
The bridge was on the Erie Railway line. In Caledonia, the northern line was always the A&GW / Erie line; the southern was the Beeline (CCC&I) / Big Four / New York Central RR line. This lattice truss bridge was built in 1901. The engineer was C.W. Buckholtz at the Erie Railroad. The bridge was built by American Bridge Company's Elmira branch and took two months to construct, The bridge was assembled next to the old bridge, then rolled over to its new locationand installed in 24 minutes to ensure no disruption of railroad traffic. The next train rolled over the new bridge only an hour or so later.
