This bridge is one of the most heavily ornamented bridges in the country: one of the most extensive uses of cast iron in a decorative manner on a bridge outside of the famous cast iron bridges of New York City's Central Park. It is essentially a riveted deck plate girder on steel bents, however the exterior girder and bent column system have all been encased in decorative cast iron panels. Additionally, enormously ornamental railings were included on the bridge. Ornamental castings that originally held lamps for the bridge are also in place, although the lamps themselves are long-gone.
A historical article from 1915 discussed this bridge, calling it a new bridge. Therefore it is assumed the bridge was built ca. 1914-1915.
Despite the bridge's significance and beauty, the bridge is largely ignored, and its cast iron has been allowed to deteriorate, and damage to the cast iron has never been repaired. Despite this, the majority of the cast iron remains intact on the bridge, and it would be possible to repair and replicate damaged and missing portions. This bridge deserves the same treatment as the cast iron bridges of England: a full restoration!
