Bridge Documentation

This bridge, completed in 1885, is one of the oldest metal bridges remaining in Ontario. Pre-1890 bridges are exceedingly rare in Ontario. Equally rare are multi-span pin-connected truss bridges (even single span pin-connected truss bridges are very uncommon). Thus, this two-span bridge is noteworthy based on its basic details. However, the bridge has additional significance. The bridge is the earliest known bridge that uses both wrought iron and steel in its construction. It is not surprising that the bridge has both wrought iron and steel. The metal on this bridge came from several different mills. Several different iron/steel mill brands are found on the bridge, including from overseas mills. Imported overseas iron and steel is very uncommon in bridges.

The bridge also has an unusual stone pier that has a "U" shape to it.

The bridge has been preserved for pedestrian use, making it one of the few heritage truss bridges in Ontario to be preserved in this manner.
