Bridge Documentation

Belleville has two nearly identical rainbow arch bridges in the downtown area. Both have been beautifully restored and they are excellent models for how many of Ontario's remaining rainbow arch bridges might be restored for continued use. The bridges are excellent gateways to the downtown and they greatly enhance the beauty of the surrounding area. They consist of two large spans without any overhead bracing. The spans are about as large as was built without using any overhead bracing. They stand out as significant in Ontario's collection of heritage rainbow arch bridges because of their large span length and also the multi-span design which is rare.

These bridges in Belleville are examples of the "aesthetic" rainbow arch bridge design in Ontario. Although both rainbow arch designs are aesthetically pleasing and indeed nothing short of beautiful, this particular design features a simple concrete balustrade railings and the arch rib has inset rectangles. Another design of rainbow arch built in Ontario instead has fence-like railings and no inset rectangles in the arch rib.
