Information from Ontario Bridge Inventory: Bridge width: 15.2 meters. Rehabilitation in 2011 likely resulted in loss of original railings.
There are five of these bridges all one right after another, and oddly enough all crossing the same creek, which weaves back and forth across King's Highway 40 between Wallaceburg and Chatham. Individually, the structures are one of Ontario's most widely constructed historical standard plan bridge designs, the concrete rigid frame, which featured a pleasing arch shape with decorative, period railing design. They appear to have been popular from the 1930s through the 1970s. Each bridge was individually of limited heritage significance, but together this was a rare case where one right after another this bridge design is seen in an essentially unaltered condition. Unfortunately, a return to this area in 2013 showed that all these bridges lost their original railings, those having been replaced with ugly standard concrete barriers. As such, while these bridges technically are still extant, they no longer have any heritage or aesthetic value... considering that in Ontario this is not a rare bridge type, and that many other unaltered examples can still be found. The Historic Significance Rating applies to the bridge prior to loss of railing. A few photos were taken of Big Creek Bridge 3 after the railing replacement, so visit that page to see photos of what all five bridges look like today.
