Bridge Documentation

This bridge is a traditionally composed example of a through plate girder railway bridge. The bridges substructure is unusual. The western pier is a traditional concrete pier. The other two piers are riveted steel caissons. Caissons are less common on railroad bridges than highway bridges, so these are an unusual detail. They mystery is why one pier is concrete. Sometimes substructure variations like this indicate that some portions of the substructure were reused from a previous bridge. This concrete pier, at least today, sits off and away from the main channel of the river, so it is possible that soil conditions differed here. It is also possible that all piers are original and that there was some advantage to doing the concrete pier here instead of the caissons.
