Bridge Documentation

When documented in 2016, this stretch of 9 Mile River was unusual because it had old bridges for each crossing, a total of four old bridges. It is unusual to have so many old bridges in one area. Three of the four were concrete girders with one metal truss bridge. All four bridges were part of a study in 2010, which was attempting to decide which bridges might be demolished and replaced, and which ones might be closed permanently. As such, some or all of these bridges may be at risk for demolition.

This is the metal truss of the group. Despite some end post repair and other miscellaneous bolted repairs, the truss bridge overall retains its original materials, character, and charm. Compared to neighboring Bruce County, Huron County has a much smaller surviving population of metal truss bridges. Therefore this bridge is locally less common and more significant than it might be in areas with greater populations.

The bridge was built ca. 1910, but the exact construction date is unknown. This bridge was noted to have some abutment deterioration, but the truss itself was in decent condition.
