Bridge Documentation

This is one of two operable plate girder swing bridges in Smiths Falls. This bridge is electrically powered. It is strongly bobtailed, with only a short section extending north from the swing pier, away from the canal. The swing pier itself rests on short next to the canal. This arrangement is similar to other swing bridges on the canal. This bridge has a cantilevered sidewalk on the west side. This sidewalk has an old style metal grate deck that is clearly not modern, and may be original to the bridge. However, the sidewalk rests on cantilevers that are not riveted and are bolted to the girder, suggesting that the sidewalk cantilevers were replaced, but the sidewalk grate decking was reused.
