This bridge is a very long and impressive high level railroad bridge. It is mostly deck plate girder spans. However the largest, main span over Brandywine Creek is a pin-connected deck truss. There is also a rivet-connected Warren deck truss. Given that pin-connections are an older technology and rivet connections a newer technology, one might think the rivet-connected span is a replacement. However, both truss spans are original. At the time, the larger span was simply too large to be easy to erect as a rivet-connected truss. This makes the bridge a unique comparison between the truss technologies and it illustrates the gradual transition from pin to rivet connected bridges, which not only occurred over time, but with gradually larger spans as well.
